Enhancing your cooking skills means familiarising yourself with different techniques and fundamentals. Wine has long been considered a key ingredient in countless dishes worldwide, helping to deglaze pans and break down fats and other flavour components. Furthermore, wine can enhance the flavour of a dish with a rich acidity or fruitiness. If you want to elevate the quality of your cooking, consider the following advice for cooking with wine.

Don’t Cook With Wine You Wouldn’t Be Happy To Drink

As a rule of thumb, experts advise against cooking with a wine you wouldn’t be happy to drink. While many of us reserve an unwanted bottle of gifted wine for “cooking wine”, chances are you won’t enjoy the favour it could add to a dish. That said, you can purchase specific cooking wine to add acidity and to break down tougher cuts of meat when used in marinades. However, for sauces, braising and deglazing, a good quality dry wine will add an excellent layer of flavour. Try to avoid oaky wines like Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay, as they can become bitter when cooked.

Learn About Wine Pairings

When it comes to selecting the ideal variety of wine for a recipe, it is always worth considering how well a specific wine will pair with the finished product. For example, take the classic warming French comfort dish, beef bourguignon. French cuisine experts advise both cooking and serving your stew with a weighty Pinot Noir or a robust Beaujolais. Lighter seafood dishes like moules mariniere work best with a light-bodied, aromatic Riesling or Chablis.

Marinating

One of the primary uses for wine in cooking is as an ingredient in a marinade. Not only does alcohol in wine tenderise the meat by breaking down its proteins, a process known as “denaturing”, but it also adds a complex depth of flavour.

Red wine and steak are a classic combination. As such, you can elevate the flavour and improve the texture of a sirloin tip side steak by marinating it in a balanced mixture of red wine, olive oil, garlic, herbs and seasonings.

Deglazing

Deglazing is another common cooking technique that uses wine to dissolve the caramelised food particles left on the bottom of a pan (known as fond) after sautéeing or roasting meat and vegetables. Deglazing is an excellent way to release every bit of flavour into a dish and is often the starting point for creating a sauce or preparing a braise. While you can use water or broth to deglaze, wine or dry sherry adds sweetness and acidity.

Red Wine Jus

Au jus is a French culinary term meaning "with juice". Essentially a thin gravy made from meat juices derived from a roast, a jus is the perfect way to enhance the flavour of prime rib roast or roast chicken. Rich, full-bodied burgundy wine varieties work exceptionally well as part of a sumptuous jus, along with aromatic herbs like rosemary and bay. You could even use port to make a deliciously sweet jus perfect for filet mignon or garlic mushrooms.

Flambéing

Learning to flambé can seem like a daunting prospect; however, once you get the hang of it, flambéing can give a dish a wonderfully smokey yet savoury quality. Flambéing is traditionally done using a high-alcohol spirit like brandy, cognac or rum; wine, on the other hand, is too low in alcohol, so it will not ignite. However, you can flambé traditional wine-based dishes such as coq au vin by adding a few tablespoons of cognac.

Braising

Although any liquid can be used for braising, wine adds an excellent depth of flavour. For the best results, choose a full-bodied red wine like Nebbiolo, and mix it with stock to slow-cook meats like lamb shoulder and shanks, as well as chicken thighs and legs. Braising tenderises fattier cuts of meat by dissolving collagen and connective tissue into gelatin, making for tender, flavour-packed meat that falls off the bone.

Dessert Wine

Dessert wine is an excellent addition to sweet treats like trifle and poached pears. Fortified wines like sherry, port and madeira are commonly used as ingredients in both sweet and savoury dishes, adding a sweet, nutty flavour to sauces, soups and stews. While the alcohol content of fortified wine is relatively high, the majority of alcohol is burnt off in the cooking process through evaporation.

The UK boasts over 3000 stately homes. The preservation of the UK’s cultural heritage plays a crucial role in connecting communities with their past, which is why over 200 of the country’s stately homes are owned, managed and maintained by the National Trust. From Chatsworth House to Highclere Castle, these incredible structures, formerly occupied by aristocratic families, are now mostly open to the public and often host weddings, historical re-enactments and film crews.

Indeed, stately homes are considered beacons of architectural excellence and historical importance - but what exactly defines a stately home? Generally considered to be a large, rural house or mansion built between the 1600s and the early 1900s, there are many architectural and interior features commonly associated with stately homes.

Grand Halls And Reception Rooms

The grant hall or stateroom was mostly used for entertainment purposes. Lavishly decorated and maintained to the highest standards, the grand hall is where the resident family would host balls, dinners and other social events, accommodating VIP visitors, including members of the royal family. Nowadays, grand halls and staterooms are primarily used to host weddings, charity gala balls and corporate events; however, they are still maintained to the same high standards as they were in their heyday.

High Number Of Bedrooms

The largest stately home in the UK is Wentworth Woodhouse in the Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Built circa 1725, this imposing structure boasts an astonishing 250,000 square feet of floor space and 365 bedrooms. On the other hand, Britain’s smallest stately home is grade II listed Ebberston Hall at a mere 500 square feet. Even so, as a general rule, stately homes were designed with hosting as a priority, with ample accommodation for the resident family, guests and staff.

Ornate Furniture

Stately homes invariably feature a vast array of luxury, handcrafted furnishings, antiques and priceless artwork. From giltwood armchairs to state beds to mahogany roll-top desks, the astounding level of expert craftsmanship cannot be matched. While a lot of the original French and Italian furniture collected throughout the decades remains intact and expertly preserved, many proprietors commission modern reproductions of antique furniture for maximum historical accuracy and functionality.

Vast Gardens

The aggrandisement of private gardens during the 18th and 19th centuries led to progressively more extensive and magnificent surrounding grounds - primarily thanks to English gardener Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. After all, what else is there to do with all that private land? Brown is responsible for stunning the landscapes of Corsham Court, Alnwick Castle, Croome Park and many more. A house’s gardens provided an excellent opportunity for resident families to showcase their wealth with ornate water features, sculpted hedgerows and sweeping perennial meadows.

Large Entrance Halls

The first thing anybody sees when stepping through the front door of a grand stately home is its marvellous reception room. Featuring crystal chandeliers, cantilever stone staircases and polished marble floors, the entrance hall is where hosts would greet their esteemed guests. Arguably one of the grandest stately home entrance halls is that of Chatsworth House, with stunning ceilings painted by Sir James Thornhill, depicting the life of Julius Caesar.

Chapels

The majority of stately homes feature ancillary buildings like staff quarters and chapels. Often richly decorated and ornate, the chapel was a place for the resident family and their staff to gather for worship. Although many of these chapels are now considered secular due to the removal of religious iconography, many are still licensed wedding venues and available for hire.

William Morris Wallpaper

British textile designer William Morris was a celebrated visionary and craftsman in the nineteenth century, and his work is still highly popular with modern interior designers. A pioneer in the Arts and Crafts Movement, Morris is perhaps best known for his wallpaper designs, which can be spotted in the likes of Wightwick Manor, Rodmarton Manor and many more stately homes connected to this significant late 1800s movement in the decorative and fine arts.

Artwork

As mentioned, stately homes feature an abundance of fine artwork, including paintings, sculptures, and needlework. Some pieces may have been bought from famous artists as a statement of wealth, whereas others are portraits depicting family members as a demonstration of importance and social status. Many pieces of art have been carefully preserved and act as a visual insight into the past of stately homes and the heritage of their residents.

Luxurious and supercar dealers will have very expensive cars in their range. To cater for this type of client, they will go above and beyond and offer additional services for the convenience of their customers. These services, in some situations, might be free of charge; for others, you may pay a fee. This article looks at some of the additional services offered by luxurious car dealerships.

Helicopter viewing

Most people will drive to view a potential new car; however, this isn’t the only option. Some luxurious car dealerships offer a helicopter collection and drop-off service. They will pick you up from your home in a helicopter and fly you to see your potential new vehicle, where you can test drive or just view the car. Once your viewing is over, you’ll be flown back to your home in the helicopter. This experience will come at a cost, and you’ll need somewhere to land the helicopter in your home, but if you have the money, it can make viewing your next car much more fun, and you can avoid the traffic.

Secure car delivery

When buying a supercar, you won’t be expected to collect it from most dealerships. Luxurious car dealerships work with car delivery specialists to ensure your vehicle is delivered to your address in perfect condition and with no extra miles on the clock. The vans used to deliver supercars are often enclosed to prevent dust and dirt from ruining the perfect finish of the car. Many luxury car dealerships will offer this form of delivery for an extra cost to the customer; it can be a great option if the car is located in a dealership that’s far away from the customer’s home.

Champagne catering

If you visit the right luxurious car dealership, you might find that you're served champagne whilst you’re choosing the colour extras to be included in your vehicle. When customers are spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on a vehicle, the dealership wants to ensure they’re happy. Champagne is one of the drinks that is served at the most luxurious car dealerships. Others might offer premium non-alcoholic drinks for those that are driving and don’t have a chauffeur to take them home after they’ve chosen their vehicle.

Vehicle sourcing

If you choose the right supercar dealer, they will go above and beyond to find the car that suits your needs and specifications. You can even pay a luxurious car dealership to find a suitable car for your needs and budget; this service is called vehicle sourcing. It takes all of the stress and hassle out of finding a car yourself. There will be an extra charge for this service, but many people find it worth it when they can sit at home and relax or get on with their work, knowing that someone else is finding them the perfect car.

Unique test driving

Many luxurious car dealerships and car manufacturers will offer unique test-driving experiences so you can see what it feels like to drive the car before you commit to purchasing. This might include the ability to have the vehicle moved to your home address so you can test drive it without needing to travel anywhere. Some luxurious car dealers and manufacturers also put on events in grand country estates or expensive hotels with lots of land and space to drive around. During these events, they will tell you everything there is to know about the car and give you the opportunity to test drive it around the grounds. These events are exclusive and often combined with luxurious catering and other extras.

If you have the budget to buy from a luxurious car dealership, you will get access to services that are not accessible to most people. These services are in place to make buying a new car much easier and more enjoyable for the customer. For the dealership, these services attract customers and encourage them to make a purchase from them rather than another luxury dealership. Service is incredibly important when you’re buying such an expensive item, especially when you’re buying the very best supercars. Customers will seek out dealerships that are renowned for their great customer service and extra services.

If you’re learning to sew, you’ve probably toyed with the idea of purchasing a sewing machine. While hand-sewing is a valuable skill, sewing machines are excellent tools for completing projects quicker and more efficiently. That said, sewing machines can be profoundly complicated for beginners. With so many (literal) moving parts and the potential to frustrate you beyond belief, it’s easy to see why many crafters shy away from these intimidating tools. However, here is your sign to take the plunge and purchase your first-ever sewing machine. With enough time, patience and perseverance, it could be the best decision you ever made for your crafting capabilities.

Choose A Good-Quality Machine

While a good craftsperson never blames their tools, you can’t argue with quality. Choosing a high-quality machine may be relatively straightforward for seasoned sewers; however, if you’re a beginner, the sheer abundance of choice may prove overwhelming. There are multiple features that constitute a high-quality sewing machine; for example:

Responsive pressure on the foot pedal

Easy-to-use controls

Basic range of stitches

Lightweight

Service and warranty included

Of course, absolute beginners may want to consider buying a second-hand sewing machine until they grasp the basic techniques. That said, second-hand sewing machines always come with financial risk, and you may require specialist (and pricey) labour to adjust any faults. Furthermore, sewing machines have a limited lifespan, particularly when they are used intensively; therefore, th

ere is no way of knowing how much life your second-hand machine has left in it.

Familiarise Yourself With Sewing Terminology

Once you’ve procured a good-quality sewing machine, it’s time to start familiarising yourself with basic sewing terminology. Understanding the essential words and phrases associated with sewing machines will allow you to gain the necessary knowledge and confidence to get started. Some of the most commonly used terms include:

Bobbin - a small plastic or metal wheel on which the lower thread is wound.

Foot Pedal - the tool that controls the speed of your machine, freeing up your hands to guide the fabric.

Feed Dog - the strips of metal ridges located underneath the presser foot that feed your fabric evenly through the machine.

Hand Wheel - used to slowly and manually control the take up lever and needle.

Spool Pin - used to prevent the thread from becoming tangled and snagged as you sew.

Learn How To Thread Your Machine

Threading your machine for the first time can be an overwhelming task. Fortunately, you can find helpful step-by-step tutorials online. Begin your process by winding your bobbin. You can skip this step if you have pre-wound bobbins - a common accessory for brother sewing machines. Now you can load the bobbin into its case and begin threading your upper thread. Most modern machines feature handy pictorial thread guides, so you should quickly get the hang of this step. Once you have gently pulled your thread through the thread guide and through the eye of your needle, you can use the hand wheel to pull the bobbin thread up from below.

Learn How To Stitch A Straight Line

The ability to sew a straight line is a basic yet vitally important sewing technique. Despite what many beginner sewers may think, sewing a straight line can be profoundly tricky initially, as the needle is constantly moving; however, practice makes perfect and provided you make a consistent effort, your straight lines will improve. Once you’ve mastered this technique, your seams and hems will look neat and professional.

Iron Your Fabric

Ironing your fabric will make it abundantly easier to work with. With neat, wrinkle-free fabric, you can make precision cuts and minimise the risk of snagging. That said, there are exceptions; for instance, some fabrics that require little-to-no pre-sewing ironing include wool, cotton, linen and jersey. Furthermore, you should always “press” your seams after sewing, so they lie flat, using the lowest heat setting possible for the aforementioned fabrics.

Zero Waste Crafting

Your formative sewing projects will likely produce a fair bit of textile waste. Not every project will be successful, so you will probably end up with an abundance of scrap fabric. Textile waste accounts for a significant proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions; hence, you can do your bit for the planet by embracing zero waste sewing. Only use as much fabric as your projects require, reuse scraps and upcycle old projects.

Running is a great way to improve your overall health and become fitter and stronger. You can mix up your schedule and work on different techniques by doing different types of running. It may be helpful to know what each type of running consists of; if you’re new to running and want to create a training schedule, this article will provide you with this information.

Recovery run

After a long run the previous day or a hard workout, you’ll still be recovering from the activity. Many runners like to go out for a short slow run as part of their active recovery. This prevents their muscles from becoming stiff and enables them to get outside and be active. When doing a recovery run, you should keep to a slow, comfortable pace and not push yourself too far. This activity is about recovering rather than building on your endurance or speed.

Hill repeats

These are exactly what the name suggests, running up a hill repeatedly. This form of training is perfect for building strength and speed and improving your mental willpower. The hill should be moderately steep and short. It should be challenging and difficult; if this isn’t the case, find a steeper hill or push yourself harder. Hill repeats should use all the energy you have to go up and down. That being said, you shouldn’t do hill repeats too often; once a week is a good time frame for this exercise. Try rotating the hills you use to keep things interesting and challenging.

Base run

A base run is what you’ll be doing most of the time when you’re running. It involves running at your natural pace for a moderate amount of time. You should do base runs frequently if you're working up towards an event. They shouldn’t be too challenging or strenuous as part of your training plan. Regular base running can improve your endurance and keep you at a good fitness level. Your length and pace will vary as you build up your fitness level to a longer and potentially quicker base run.

Long run

A long run should be challenging, and you should feel tired after completing a long run. The length will depend on your experience and fitness level. For some runners, a long right might be around 20 miles; for others, it could be 10. A long run is always longer than your base run and more challenging. In a long run, you might need to consume running gels or other energy sources to keep yourself sustained.

Progression run

This type of run starts at a natural pace but then transitions to a quicker pace towards the end of the run. Progression runs are challenging for runners but not too difficult. They can help to improve your stamina whilst reducing the risk of injury. A progression run might start with 45 minutes of a natural running pace and end with 15 minutes of running at a strong pace.

Intervals

Intervals are great for building fitness, burning calories and adding variety to your training. This type of running includes periods of slow jogging or walking and periods of fast running. Beginners can even try interval running to build them up to be able to run for longer periods at once.

Fartlek

A fartlek run is similar to an interval run but with less structure. There are different paces set throughout the run that need to be upheld. Often a single competitor sets the pace for the race in different sections of a fartlek run. Practising this type of running can help to improve your speed, race tactics and ability to overtake competitors when tired.

Tempo run

This type of running is very quick and challenging; the runner will push themselves to their quickest pace that can be maintained for the duration of the fastest part of the run. The run will start slowly with a warm-up and end with a cool-down period. These runs don’t need to be very far, but they’re all about pushing the runner to their maximum pace. A tempo run helps runners to improve their overall speed. These should be performed once or twice a week as they’re very high-intensity workouts that you need to take time out to recover from afterwards.

Dedicated enthusiasts of fashion may be familiar with the Kibbe body type system. Developed by New York beauty guru David Kibbe in the 1980s, this system focuses on an axis of yin and yang (feminine and masculine energy), to define a set of archetypal body shapes based on physical characteristics. The purpose of this system was to help individuals better understand which patterns, cuts, colours and fabric weights work in harmony with their body types.

Around the same time Kibbe established his style system, colour analyst and stylist John Kitchener created his own method for defining an individual's “essence”. In short, your essence is determined by the appearance of your face and the overall ambience that you emanate. It may also be slightly dependent on factors such as your body shape and physicality. Here is a rough guide to the seven essence archetypes. Whether you identify with a singular archetype or a combination of several, you can gain a touch of insight into which style choices may or may not suit your unique qualities.

Dramatic

The dramatic style essence is considered the most yang-dominant, which means it is bold, striking and powerful. Hallmark features of this style archetype include narrow, angular attributes and an overall visual impression of dignity and theatricality. In terms of clothing, strong, powerful shapes, bold patterns, and long, flared silhouettes work exceptionally on individuals with dramatic essence. Celebrity dramatics include Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani and Cher.

Gamine

Gamine is another example of a yang-dominant essence, although whereas dramatic individuals exude intensity, gamine individuals exude playfulness. Gamine faces are considered delicate, youthful and pixie-like, with a high contrast of sharp and soft features. If you have a predominantly gamine frame, oversized garments may overwhelm you, whereas shorter dresses and gender-neutral garments will complement your boyish charm. You could also mix colours and textures to highlight your whimsical creativity. Gamine essence is typical of celebrities like Emma Watson and Liza Minelli.

Natural

Romantic essence is generally categorised by slim, strong features and a laid-back personality. While natural and dramatic are both yang essences, natural leans more towards a relaxed, approachable ambience. Individuals with natural essence may find that they look effortlessly chic in slightly oversized garments and earthy, natural tones typical of 1970s fashion. Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Aniston both exude a typically natural essence.

Romantic

Romantic essence is predominantly yin, defined by glamour, femininity and soft, lush features. Those with romantic essence may seem naturally alluring and exude a sense of mature sensuality. Romantic essence can be accentuated with delicate flowing garments and elegant, timeless fabrics typical of agua clothing. If you have romantic essence, you could also experiment with feature-enhancing pin-up style makeup, quintessential of silver screen movie stars like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as modern celebrities such as Lana Del Rey.

Classic

One of the more balanced archetypes, individuals with classic essence may come across as professional, polished and refined. Classic essence is also defined by symmetrical, even facial features and a physical stature to match. If you suspect you may have classic essence, you will look fantastic in timeless, ever-fashionable, even vintage garments that fit your frame well. Consider celebrities with classic essence, such as Anne Hathaway and Taylor Swift, for inspiration.

Ingenue

While ingenue and gamine essence are often confused due to the defining characteristics of petite frames and youthful faces, ingenue is yin-dominated. If you’re often told you have an innocent, youthful charm, you may have ingenue essence, particularly if you have soft, delicate features, a heart-shaped face or large, round eyes. You can exaggerate your yin essence by wearing vintage-inspired pieces, florals, lace and other stereotypically feminine items. Celebrities with ingenue essence include Lupita Nyong'o and Emma Stone.

Angelic/Ethereal

Angelic or ethereal essence is categorised by elongated facial features with an element of softness. Individuals with this highly yin-dominant essence generally have an otherworldly quality to their appearance, with wide-set eyes and prominent cheekbones - they could even be described as “unusual” or “uncanny”. If you have ethereal essence, you will likely look best draped in pale-coloured, fine fabrics like chiffon and silk with dramatic, flowing silhouettes. You might also be complemented by translucency, ornate detail and accessories featuring feathers. Celebrities like Tilda Swinton and Anya Taylor-Joy have quintessentially ethereal essence.

Useful Content:

Notion

Notist - The Various Ways To Style Jeans And A T-Shirt

Collected Notes - How To Style A Blazer

Victoria Beckham Dresses

Victoria Beckham Clothing - Homify

Winter will soon be over, and as the frost thaws and the days become longer, family outdoor adventures become much more frequent. Spring is the ideal time of year to introduce your baby to the great outdoors - particularly April and May, the beautifully verdant window of time before the blistering heat of summer sets in. Allowing your baby to experience the wonders of nature will significantly impact their development, including improved cognitive functioning and greater motor coordination. Here are some suggestions for excellent family outdoor experiences your baby will love.

Take A Walk

Fun, refreshing and absolutely free, a brisk walk in your local park or nature reserve could be the perfect way to introduce your little one to the different local trees, flowers and animals. Remember that spring weather can be rather wet, so make sure you pack wellies, waterproof suits and a change of clothes just in case. You could even bring a bag of oats, birdseed or frozen peas and give the ducks a tasty treat.

Visit A Playground

A baby-safe playground can be an excellent environment for aiding your little one’s gross motor skills and social development. While not every playground is suitable for babies and toddlers, others have designated areas for smaller children. You may even find that your baby purely enjoys observing other children at play. It goes without saying but considering your baby will be keen to explore, ensure you supervise them at all times.

Garden Tummy Time

Tummy time is when you lay your little one on their stomach for brief periods of time so they can strengthen their neck and shoulder muscles and improve their motor skills. Begin with short sessions of 3-5 minutes and provide your baby with a range of toys to enhance their experience. During springtime, you could take your baby outdoors for tummy time, placing them on a picnic blanket or straight onto soft grass for a beneficial sensory experience.

Have A Picnic

There are few things more enjoyable than a leisurely springtime picnic. Due to soaring temperatures, summer picnics can result in irritations such as spoilt food and melted ice cream. Furthermore, long periods of time spent outdoors during heat waves can also result in sunburn and heat-related illnesses, which can be incredibly dangerous for babies. Play it safe by getting your fill of picnic fun while the weather is still relatively mild.

Go To The Beach

Your baby’s first time at the beach will be a joyous experience for everyone involved. A day at the beach invariably results in treasured memories - building sand castles, splashing in the shallow waves and enjoying quality family time. The sand and sea will provide brand-new sensory experiences that help develop new connections in their brain through play. Make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen, a tent for shade and several pairs of clean, dry baby socks for the journey home.

Play With Bubbles

Simple, cheap and low-effort, a tub of bubbles can provide your little one with a profoundly enjoyable experience. Bubbles ignite curiosity within babies, assisting hand-eye and foot-eye coordination development as they reach out to catch and pop the floating orbs. Eventually, your baby will learn how to blow bubbles for themselves, which is beneficial for their jaw and mouth muscles, aiding language development. You could even purchase a bubble machine or a giant bubble wand for extra fun.

Outdoor Messy Play

Messy play in all forms is highly beneficial for multiple areas of development. Messy play helps to build fine motor control, problem-solving skills, social and emotional development and much more. The beauty of setting up messy play activities outdoors is you don’t have to worry about clean-up quite as much. Place a bow-up paddling pool on a soft patch of grass and fill it with water, sand, shaving foam or something edible like jelly or cereal. Add some plastic cups, spoons and bowls, and you’re good to go.

Tend The Garden/Allotment

Nature enthusiasm begins young. You can encourage your children to be passionate about the environment by getting them involved from day one. If you have a veg or flower garden at home, include your little one in the watering process and watch as your greenery grows over time. Once your baby reaches toddlerhood, involvement in gardening will teach them patience and inspire them to try new foods.

Further Reading:

Newborn baby clothes - Hamburg University of Technology

Baby Hats - Notion

W3Schools

Is your new year’s resolution to eat better and work towards a generally healthier lifestyle? Perhaps you’ve decided to be more conscious and selective about what you put into your body - after all, we only get one. Despite what you may have been led to believe, healthy eating regimes don’t have to be all about bland salads, multivitamins and saying no to dessert. You can vastly improve your diet with the addition of nutritious and delicious foods guaranteed to make you feel fantastic.

Berries

Berries are certified superfoods. In fact, studies have shown raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries have the highest antioxidant activity of common fruits. Delicious and packed with mountains of vitamin C, berries are exceptionally easy to incorporate into your daily diet. Top your morning porridge, granola or yoghurt with a handful of mixed berries or add them to an energising smoothie along with banana, honey and coconut milk.

Nuts

Nuts are an excellent source of heart-healthy unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients. Furthermore, nuts and seeds promote strong nails, shiny hair and glowing skin. Whether you favour almonds, cashews, pistachios or walnuts, they can be a wonderfully convenient go-to snack to replace potato chips. You could also top smoothie bowls, salads and stir frys with a handful of your favourite toasted nuts and seeds for an extra boost of fibre, protein and healthy fats.

Avocado

The humble avocado is definitely having its moment in the limelight - and rightly so. Due to their high monounsaturated fat content, research suggests that avocados protect against heart disease and lower blood pressure. Avocados are also an excellent source of vitamins C, E, and K, as well as pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. Arguably the best way to enjoy avocado is mashed onto thick-cut sourdough toast with a light sprinkle of sea salt, black pepper and chilli flakes.

Kimchi

The Korean community has enjoyed the incredible health benefits of Kimchi for over 3,000 years, so it’s easy to see why this spicy fermented side dish is the country’s national food. Like many other fermented foods, such as sauerkraut and cultured yoghurt, Kimchi is excellent for gut health, promoting the growth of beneficial probiotics. Kimchi is also a source of beta-carotene and other antioxidant compounds that protect against a number of chronic illnesses. Enjoy your Kimchi as an ingredient in fried rice or alongside other classic Korean dishes such as Bibimbap.

Hummus

Hummus is a thick, creamy Middle Eastern dip primarily made from mashed chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic, although traditional recipes vary from region to region. Naturally vegetarian and vegan, hummus is a great source of plant-based protein, promoting muscle growth and a robust immune system. Hummus is also a fantastic source of fibre, which aids digestion and is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Red Wine

Yes, that’s right - wine! Specifically red wine. Although all alcohol should be consumed in moderation, red wine contains antioxidants that can help to prevent coronary artery disease. Studies have also shown that people who drink red wine are likely to have an increased gut microbiota diversity. Whether you favour Spanish wines like Rioja, French Pinot Noir or Italian classics such as Brunello, the occasional glass of red could do you good.

Dark Chocolate

Sticking to a long-term healthy eating plan involves allowing yourself a treat now and again. Small indulgences throughout the week will keep you on track and are vitally important for your mental well-being as well as your physical well-being. Lovers of chocolate can rejoice in the knowledge that dark chocolate is loaded with nutrients like fibre, iron, magnesium and zinc. It also contains several times more antioxidants than green tea!

Tea

Speaking of tea, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that it can boost your immune system and reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke due to the presence of polyphenols that have potent antioxidant effects. Beginning your morning with a warming cup of green or black tea could be an excellent, less caffeinated replacement for your usual coffee, which could interfere with your cortisol levels and leave you feeling drained after the inevitable caffeine crash later in the day.

Resources:

Riesling Wines - Collected Notes

Bottles of Champagne - Conifer

Vintage Red Wine - HHI

Dessert Wine - STUDIO

Fine Wines in Hong Kong - ConvertKit

Fortified Wine - Homify

Car drifting is a fun, high-adrenaline sport that’s getting more popular with car and racing enthusiasts. Many people seek out drifting experiences or enjoy watching professional drifters compete at events. In this article, we take a look at some ways you can experience car drifting.

What is drifting?

Drifting is a dangerous sport that involves high speeds, making it even more appealing to many adrenaline seekers. If you’ve never seen or experienced drifting, the best thing to do is head over to YouTube and watch some footage of drivers drifting. You’ll probably see lots of smoke and cars looking as if they’ve lost control whilst going at high speeds around corners. In simple terms, drifting is oversteering a vehicle, which is when your back tires lose grip on the road and drift or slide around the corner. The loss of control is done very carefully to enable drivers to make quick turns. Drifting requires skills and interpretation of the vehicle; otherwise, things can go very wrong, leading to large, high-speed accidents.

Car drifting experience day

If you want the ultimate drifting experience, you can book yourself onto a professionally run car drifting experience day. During the experience, professional drifters will teach you how to perfect this skill in several different vehicles. You’ll also get to ride along with them whilst they show you the skills of a professional drifter. This is a great day out for any car enthusiast that has an interest in drifting. Experience days on the track also make the perfect present for lovers of motorsport. For those new to drifting, this is a great way to get into the sport and try it with a professional on hand to give advice and tips on how to drift in the safest possible way.

Can you drift on the roads?

In most countries drifting on roads or in car parks is illegal. Drifting is dangerous as vehicles reach high speeds and essentially lose control of the car's back end. When motorists practise drifting on public roads or car parks, they put themselves and other road users at risk of injury. Therefore this sport is illegal to practise in these areas. If you get caught drifting in the UK, you could be charged with dangerous driving, amongst other offences. Never drift on public roads or in car parks, as it's illegal and dangerous for you, other road users or anyone in the near vicinity.

Drifting tracks

The best place to drift is on purpose-built drifting tracks; here, it is perfectly legal, and the environment is controlled to minimise risk. If you have a car of your own that you want to drift, you’ll need to get a set of drift wheels. Regular tyres won’t provide you with the right surface for drifting as they’re designed for the opposite purpose, keeping your car gripped to the surface of the road. Drifting tires have a very little tread pattern; instead, they’re made to be smooth on the surface to allow the car to slide and drift around corners. If you use standard tires, they will soon become worn and unsuitable for use on the road. A separate pair of drifting wheels you can use on the track will stop your tires from being ruined and improve your drifting performance.

Spectating drifting events

If you love to watch drifting but don’t want to put yourself in the driving seat, you can choose to attend drifting events as a spectator. This is the safest and cheapest way to enjoy the drifting experience. Professional drifting events are fun, thrilling, and a great way to enjoy this sport. You can make a whole day of it as there are often other things to do and see at the drifting track. The whole family can enjoy watching cars race, drift and push their performance. Suppose you’re interested in drifting but have only just learned about this sport. In that case, we suggest you go to a few drifting events as a spectator before participating in a drifting experience yourself. It will give you a better understanding of the sport and the risks involved with participating. Although drifting with a professional is controlled, some risks are still involved.

If you have always wanted to have a go at growing your own plants it can be quite hard to know where to start, especially if you have absolutely no prior experience in keeping plants alive and helping them to thrive. It may be the case that you have previously had the odd potted plant in your home or garden and want to expand on this to improve your skills and grow more attractive or useful plants to use.

There is a wealth of information available in books and on websites that can assist you in expanding your knowledge and skills, but information and tips for complete novices can be harder to track down. Luckily, this brief guide is designed to cover some of the absolute basics of growing plants including how and where to grow them, and which plants may be suitable for your skill level and growing environment.

First things first

Before you get ahead of yourself and start putting your hard earned money down on seeds, soil and tools you will need to assess the space you plan to grow your plants in. This could be your own back or front garden, an allotment, a series of pots on a balcony, or even an indoor hydroponic garden.

The kind of space you have available will have a strong bearing on the type and number of plants you can grow and will form the basis of your garden plan. This step may not be as simple as you may initially think, mostly because you can’t truly assess the amount of space a plant needs just by looking at its above-ground growth.

A plant can have excessively large roots relative to the stems, leaves and shoots that appear above the soil surface and it is vital that the roots are accounted for in terms of their depth and lateral spread.

If you have a large space then this will be less of an issue for you. If you have a very small space then you will either need to limit the type or number of plants you are growing to make sure there’s adequate space.

Bear in mind that a small space doesn’t need to mean you can’t grow the plants you want, only that you may have to make some smart decisions and use alternative methods. For example, you can use hydroponics to grow plants that need a lot of space in a more compact way. This is because the growing conditions can be optimised to reduce competition between plants, allowing each plant to grow well with a more compact root.

Next, you need to think about the climate of the area you live in. Even though the UK is relatively small, there are a wide range of localised climate conditions that certain parts of the country are prone to. For example, parts of the UK under the Pennine rain shadow are much wetter than average, and coastal areas range from mild and almost Mediterranean in feel to wild, windswept and cold.

Outdoor plants for beginners

If you are looking to grow some plants that are simple, straightforward and relatively reliable for beginners to grow then you’ll still have an amazing range of plants to choose from including fruits, vegetables, flowers and foliage plants. Flowers such as pansies, sunflowers and marigolds are all great choices for your first garden.

If you fancy growing edible plants in your garden then look for easy options like mint, rosemary, tomatoes, lettuce, peas and radishes. Choose your varieties carefully because some are tricker to get going than others and keep in mind that heirloom varieties often have more flavour and colour, but they also can be harder to accommodate with beginner levels of experience.

Indoor plants for beginners

Plants that are too sensitive to the outdoor conditions where you live can often be grown as houseplants instead, and you can also grow plants indoors that you may usually find outside if that is your preference.

The hardest part of growing plants indoors is ensuring they have enough light, so be prepared to supplement their light if there isn’t enough coming in through the windows. Cacti, succulents, spider plants, pothos, peace lilies and philodendrons are all good choices for a beginner.

Moving into your first home is a gratifying experience. Whether you’re renting or buying, flying the nest is a momentous life achievement and cause for celebration. That being said, moving in for the first time can be overwhelming - with so much to pack, unpack and organise, you would be forgiven for forgetting the odd thing. Here is a moving-in checklist to make your first new home one to be proud of.

Sofa and Chairs

The living room is the social hub of the home. Any space dedicated to hosting and entertaining friends and family needs a comfortable sofa and a couple of welcoming armchairs. Consider the dimensions of your living room and choose your sofa’s size and style wisely - as cosy as large corner sofas may seem, their awkward shape makes them difficult to place. Opt for a style that suits your desired aesthetic and invest in quality materials where possible.

Bed

A good quality bed is well worth the investment. High-quality sleep is vital to physical and mental well-being, so select a durable bed frame and a mattress that suits your needs. A relatively firm mattress that evenly distributes weight and keeps your spine aligned at night can do wonders for a problematic sleeping pattern.

Wardrobe

Keeping your clothes protected and organised is the key to avoiding a build-up of clutter. While you may not have the luxury of a spacious walk-in wardrobe, a good quality wardrobe made from solid wood will ensure your garments are wrinkle-free and safe from dust and moisture, keeping them fresh and prolonging their lifespan.

Drawers

Not every garment is suitable for hanging in a wardrobe. Materials such as cashmere and merino wool are prone to stretching and warping when hung on coat hangers, so keep them safe by folding them neatly into a chest of drawers. You will also need some drawers to store smaller clothing items and accessories like socks, scarves and jewellery.

Bookcase

Reading enthusiasts famously accumulate mountains of books. Keeping your literature stacked on shelves and coffee tables only leads to excess clutter, making your home feel untidy and claustrophobic. Avoid this by purchasing a large, sturdy bookcase, which you can also use to display ornaments, photographs and other trinkets. You could buy your bookcase new or scour second-hand furniture emporiums for a bargain.

Dining Table and Chairs

While you may be happy to eat your meals sitting on the sofa in front of the TV, a dining table is a multi-use item of furniture that you won’t regret buying. Host lively dinner parties, catch up with old friends or even use your dining table as a workspace. For smaller spaces, extending oak dining tables are excellent space-saving options that can be folded out to make extra room for company when needed.

Coffee Table

We’ve all been guilty of placing a mug of coffee, or a glass of red wine on the floor next to the sofa, only to knock it over, causing a real mess. Having somewhere to set your drink down will reduce the risk of stubborn stains and broken glassware, so grab a functional, stylish coffee table that matches the aesthetic of your living area.

Office Furniture

Whether you work from home or enjoy playing video games on your days off, a functional office area with a sturdy desk and an ergonomic chair are essential. Spending extended periods sitting at a desk can play havoc with your spine and joints. A comfortable office or gaming chair with lumbar support will reduce stress on these important areas of your body, leading to better posture and long-term spinal health.

Bathroom Storage

Allowing products and toiletries to accumulate on the side of your bath will result in a cluttered bathroom, making it almost impossible to relax. Keep your various bottles, tubs and boxes organised by purchasing some bathroom storage, such as a set of rattan bathroom drawers. Alternatively, you could grab the screwdriver and install some shelves.

Side Tables

Side tables are incredibly helpful in every room of the house, either beside your bed, sofa, desk or even bath. Use side tables as a functional surface for lamps or for drawing attention to decorative objects like flowers and artwork. For smaller spaces, you could opt for a set of nesting side tables, perfect for when you need a little extra surface space.

Landing your dream job as a teacher is an accomplishment worth celebrating. Whether you’re educating a group of young children or adults, teaching invariably changes lives. As engaging and rewarding as a teaching career can be, it will involve a great deal of organisation, self-discipline and multitasking. Fortunately, there are several tips, tricks and products helpful for making your job a little easier to cope with, so you can focus on the more important things, like being a passionate and enthusiastic role model for young people.

Antibacterial Wipes and Hand Gel

It’s no secret that children are expert germ spreaders. Since the pandemic, public spaces like schools, hospitals and care homes have been rigorous in terms of hygiene, encouraging regular hand-washing and continuous surface sanitation. To avoid catching every single bug and virus going, keep a pack of antibacterial wipes and hand sanitiser at your desk or in your bag at all times.

Desk Organiser

As a teacher, you will have a continuous barrage of times, dates, names and deadlines to remember. A messy desk puts you on the road to chaos. Making organisation a priority is the key to staying afloat, so purchase a desk organiser to keep track of your paperwork, stationery and supplies. You may also wish to keep organisers dotted around the classroom to give your students easy access to pencils, scissors, paper and glue sticks.

Pens and Pencils

Speaking of stationery, you can never have too many pens and pencils. While some young children revel in having a pencil case bursting with novelty stationery, others are profoundly forgetful and disorganised. While this can be irritating, accidents happen, so help your students perform to the best of their abilities by providing spare pens, pencils and other essential items. This level of thoughtfulness seldom goes unnoticed.

Post-It Notes

The many uses of post-it notes make them a must-have item in any classroom or office. Whether you need to write yourself a quick reminder or bookmark a useful textbook passage, post-it notes are eye-catching, cost-effective and versatile. Consider using different colours for different purposes; for example, yellow notes for reminders, pink notes for planning and blue notes for annotations.

Stickers

If you’re working in a classroom full of young children, stickers will be your best form of incentive. Many young children see a sticker as a badge of honour, and it’s often surprising how effective this positive reinforcement method can be. Grab a few cheap sticker books from your local stationery store and use them for whatever you like, from rewarding good work to positive behaviour charts. Opt for simple designs such as smiley faces and stars.

School Whistle

Commanding attention as an educator is vital, and while you may not have been blessed with a naturally booming voice, there are other methods of cutting through the babel of a school hall or playground. A good old-fashioned school whistle could be just what you need to signal the end of break time or preface important announcements. The shrill sound of a whistle cuts through background noise and conveys authority with a high-pitched reverberation.

Lesson Planner

A good quality lesson planner is vital for keeping your daily schedule organised. While lesson plans featuring learning objectives, teaching strategies and activities are usually hosted online for easy access, many find having a tangible backup beneficial for optimal organisation. Keep your lesson planner handy so you can make regular notes regarding instructional modules and student progress throughout the day.

Laminator

While most educational settings have one or two laminators in the office, you may wish to include one in your classroom (PAT tested, of course) for easy access. Furthermore, with a shared laminator, there are never enough laminating pockets to go around. Laminate information sheets, flashcards and handouts to ensure minimal damage to classroom resources that your students can use repeatedly.

Timer

A timer can be an incredibly useful tool for classroom management. Whether you’re timing your students as they engage in an activity or allocating a slot of time to marking and admin, you will find that using a timer boosts productivity all round. Additionally, a timer can be a fantastic tangible prop for use in maths, science and even P.E. lessons.

Taking your children in the car for a long journey can be stressful. To make it easier for parents, we have listed some helpful car accessories to make your trip easier and protect your child and car.

In car mirror

Keeping an eye on your child while driving or in the front passenger seat isn’t always easy. You shouldn’t turn around to look at your child or baby, especially if you’re the one driving. However, you might want to check in on them to make sure they’re ok and behaving. In-car or baby mirrors are great for giving parents peace of mind while driving or sitting in the front as a passenger. To do this whilst driving or as a front-seat passenger, you can add an in-car mirror or baby mirror. These usually attach to your dashboard or sun visor, and when placed correctly, they allow you to glance to check on your child or baby quickly whilst you’re driving. If you need to look in more detail, you should stop the vehicle to prevent an accident.

Car seat protectors

Kids have a tendency to put their feet on or even kick the back of the front seats of the car. This can lead to dirty marks and even damage to the seats, which can be very frustrating for you as a parent. To help minimise damage and keep your child entertained, you can add car seat protectors to the back of the front seats. Choose a seat protector that has pockets where you can store things that will keep your child entertained during your car ride. Many of these car seat protectors have a kick mat which will protect your car seats if your child does put their feet up or kick the back of the seats when they have too much energy or feel frustrated. You can also use spare pockets for essential items such as wipes or spare nappies.

Car seats or booster seats

Depending on your child's age and size, you’ll need to have a fitted car seat or a booster seat to keep them safe when they’re riding in the car. Always choose a reliable brand and make sure the seat is fitted correctly. You should ensure the straps are securely fastened when placing your child in the car seat. The straps need to be securely fastened and close to their body to keep them safe in the event of an accident. Children and babies shouldn’t wear coats when they’re strapped in their car seats. As your child grows, you will need to switch from a car seat to a booster seat; always follow the official guidance to keep your child safe when they’re in the car.

Window sunshades

When you’re driving in the sunshine, there is no way you can avoid the sun coming through the windows unless you have tinted windows. A good way to protect your child from the sun in the car is to add window sunshades to the back. These are really easy to install; they often just stick to the window using suckers. Choose ones with a fun pattern or characters that your children like; this will help to keep them happy and entertained when you’re in the car. They can help keep your child asleep, making your whole journey much easier as a parent. In addition, they can give your family privacy as it will be harder for others to see through the windows into your car.

Disposable sickness bags

Children often struggle with car sickness on long journeys, especially if they spend time looking at a screen and not out of the window. Keeping a supply of sick bags in your car can minimise the clean-up after an accident. Pulling over straight away when your child feels sick might not always be possible, so giving them a sick bag is much better than cleaning it up off their clothes and your car. Child-sick bags are inexpensive to purchase, so it's worth buying a pack even if you never need them. If you have seat organisers in your car, add these into the pockets so your children can find them quickly and easily when you’re driving.

As a healthcare institution, you likely have a lot on your plate. You deal with patients and their families, insurance claims and reimbursements. All while trying to keep your organisation running smoothly. It's not surprising that the last thing you want to worry about is cyber security threats. But if you don't pay attention to what's happening in the world of data breaches and network attacks, one wrong click could end up costing millions of dollars in fines or worse: patient lives lost as a result of negligence on your part.

The healthcare industry is highly targeted by cybercriminals

The healthcare industry is one of the most highly targeted industries for cybercriminals. Here are a few reasons why:

Healthcare companies have access to sensitive personal information, including names and addresses.

They often handle large sums of money.

They may store data on their computers that can be used to blackmail or extort individuals or organisations.

Cybercriminals can turn their targets into Ransomware.

Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts files and demands a ransom to be paid in order to return access to the data. It can be delivered via email, or through other means such as USB sticks, or even by infecting websites.

Cybercriminals can turn their targets into Ransomware by tricking them into opening an infected file attachment with a virus called ‘Locky’ which encrypts all of your files until you pay up. One way hackers do this is by hiding malicious code inside images that are sent in mass email campaigns – for example:

Opening an attachment containing an image will launch the Locky ransomware onto your device (PC).

Visiting a webpage that contains hidden code will download the Locky ransomware onto your device (PC).

This type of attack is becoming increasingly common these days due to its effectiveness.

Healthcare institutions are increasingly handing over data to third parties.

With the increasing digitisation of healthcare, there has been an increase in third-party access to patient data. This may seem like a good thing at first, as it allows healthcare institutions to work with other companies to improve patient care or expand their services without taking on such tasks themselves. However, when it comes down to security and privacy concerns, there are many risks associated with giving your sensitive information out to third parties. Making cyber attacks on the healthcare industry more likely.

Third parties may not be as secure as the healthcare institution itself since they don’t have years of experience handling sensitive data. They also might not have similar security standards because they are not bound by HIPAA requirements like hospitals and medical centres must be (though many do anyway). And finally, these organisations could be more likely targets for cybercriminals because they often hold large amounts of personal information from millions upon millions of people at once.

Hackers have stolen detailed health information.

The number of healthcare organisations that have been hacked is astounding. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), there are over 100 million records exposed in data breaches every year, with a total of 4.5 billion records exposed since 2013.

What is most concerning about these hacks is the type of data that has been stolen: sensitive patient information including names, dates of birth, addresses and Social Security numbers—the same information used to apply for credit cards or file taxes—as well as medical diagnoses and conditions such as HIV status or pregnancy status.

The impact on individuals can be severe: identity theft as well as financial damage incurred through fraudulent charges made in your name; but even more worrisome is how this information could affect your health if it falls into dangerous hands like those who exploit vulnerable people by selling their insurance coverage under false pretences. It's not uncommon for criminals to use stolen health insurance credentials to obtain medication on others' behalf (i.e., opioids).

The weakest link in perimeter security is the employee.

A survey by the Ponemon Institute found that while healthcare organisations are working to improve their cyber security strategies, they're still lacking in employee training. For example, only 33 percent of respondents said they had a formalised training program for employees on identifying and avoiding phishing attacks, and just 16 percent said they had a formalised program for preventing ransomware infections.

These numbers are especially troubling given that employees are often the first line of defence against cyber security threats. Because they have access to sensitive data and systems, targeted phishing attacks can be used to trick them into giving away passwords or other information needed by hackers to gain unauthorised access. And since employees often handle sensitive patient data through clinical systems (whether it's at an individual level or across an entire hospital), ransomware attacks have been known to spread from one employee's computer screen onto another's screen via email attachments containing infected files.

Resources:

Healthcare Cyber Security - Hamburg University of Technology

Cyber Security in Hospitals and Healthcare - Collected Notes

Cybersecurity for Healthcare - Notion

Healthcare and Cyber Security - Swish

Cyber Attacks in the Healthcare Industry - Edublogs

Do you walk into your bathroom and immediately smell an unpleasant odour? You're not alone. Many homeowners struggle with smelly bathrooms, and it's important to identify the cause of the smell so you can take steps to get rid of it. In this artic, we'll take a look at some of the most common bathroom smells and what causes them.

Bad Smells from Your Toilet

If you’re noticing unpleasant odours in your bathroom, chances are they’re coming from your toilet. Toilet smells usually occur when urine and waste have collected in the bowl or drain and have begun to decompose. This is especially true if your toilet doesn't get used very often, as the water evaporates and the debris left behind begins to rot and create an unpleasant smell. To combat this, be sure to flush your toilet regularly and use a toilet cleaning brush to help keep the bowl and drain clean. If you’ve tried these solutions and still notice bad odours, it may be time to call a plumber for further assistance.

Musty or mouldy smells

Musty or mouldy smells in your bathroom can be quite unpleasant, but they can also be an indication of something more serious. These odours can be caused by the growth of mould and mildew due to high humidity levels in the room. Poor ventilation and excess moisture can also contribute to this problem. To tackle the smell and get rid of the mould and mildew, you’ll need to address the underlying cause. You can do this by using dehumidifiers to reduce the humidity, using exhaust fans to help remove humidity from the air, using an odour remover and cleaning frequently with a mildew cleaner. If you have a larger issue with mould or mildew, you may need to call in a professional.

Rotten egg smells

One of the most unpleasant odours to come from your bathroom can be a rotten egg smell. This is often caused by hydrogen sulphide, which is produced when bacteria break down organic material in your pipes. Hydrogen sulphide gas is flammable and can corrode metal, so it’s important to address this issue immediately.

The main culprit behind this smell is usually your water heater. If the anode rod inside the water heater is not working correctly or needs to be replaced, then the hydrogen sulphide gas can escape and cause the smell. You may also notice brown staining on fixtures if this is the case. In some cases, the sulphur smell can come from a clogged drain or sewer pipe, or even a septic tank that needs to be emptied.

If you suspect any of these issues are causing the smell, it’s best to call a plumber for help. They can identify and fix any underlying problems that could be causing the smell. Additionally, adding an odour-reducing additive to your water heater can help reduce the smell of hydrogen sulphide gas.

Ammonia smells

If you’ve ever had a strong ammonia smell in your bathroom, it can be quite unpleasant. This type of smell is often due to urine. Urine contains urea, which breaks down into ammonia when it reacts with the bacteria in your bathroom.

If your toilet and drain pipes are sealed properly, urine shouldn't escape into the air and cause this smell. However, if you're noticing an ammonia smell coming from the bathroom, it could be a sign that something is wrong with the sealant. You should get a plumber to check it out as soon as possible.

Another potential cause of ammonia smells in the bathroom could be improper ventilation. If your bathroom isn’t getting enough airflow, it can trap odours from cleaning products and other items inside. Installing an exhaust fan or opening the window can help prevent this.

If you suspect that your ammonia smell is coming from an animal or pet, then you need to clean up after them immediately. Don’t let the smell linger - use an enzyme-based cleaner that will neutralise the smell. A product like Nature's Miracle will help to eliminate any lingering odours.

No one wants a smelly bathroom, and ammonia smells are especially noxious. If you’re experiencing this kind of smell in your bathroom, take the time to identify and address the root cause. That way, you can eliminate the smell for good and keep your bathroom smelling fresh and clean.

Resources:

Odour Removers - Hamburg University of Technology

Bio Enzyme Cleaner - Collected Notes

Dog Urine Cleaner - Notion

Biogas is a renewable energy source that can be used to power homes, businesses, and even vehicles. It is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Biogas is made from organic materials like animal manure, food waste, and plant matter, and is converted into usable energy through a process called anaerobic digestion. But what benefits does it provide?

What is Biogas?

Biogas is a clean and renewable energy source made from organic waste materials. It is produced through the natural process of anaerobic digestion, where organic matter such as food scraps, animal manure, or sewage breaks down and releases a methane-rich gas which can then be captured and used for energy. The gas is most commonly used to produce electricity, but it can also be burned directly to heat buildings or even used in transportation fuels. Biogas is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to fossil fuels due to its environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by trapping carbon dioxide that would have otherwise been released into the atmosphere.

The benefits of using biogas

Biogas is an increasingly popular alternative energy source. It has a number of advantages that make it appealing to both individual households and large-scale commercial operations.

One of the primary benefits of using biogas is that it is renewable and sustainable. Biogas is created through a natural process of breaking down organic matter such as animal waste, crop residue, and food waste. This process takes place without releasing any harmful chemicals or gases into the environment. As a result, biogas is a clean, green energy source that can help reduce our reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels.

Biogas also has the potential to improve air quality. By displacing fossil fuels from various processes, biogas can help reduce emissions of pollutants like carbon dioxide and methane. In addition, biogas can be used for fuel in vehicles, which can significantly reduce emissions from cars and trucks.

Biogas is also economical, making it ideal for both residential and commercial applications. Compared to electricity from the grid, it can often save money in the long run. In many cases, biogas plants can be set up with relatively little cost. Furthermore, biogas can often be stored and used when needed, reducing dependence on traditional power sources.

Finally, biogas can help create jobs in rural areas and help farmers generate additional income. With more people getting involved in the production and use of biogas, there are more opportunities for economic growth.

Overall, biogas has numerous benefits that make it a great choice for those looking to transition to renewable energy sources. It is cost-effective, sustainable, and can have a positive impact on air quality. As the technology continues to develop, we can expect to see even more advantages of using biogas in the future.

How is biogas made?

Biogas is produced when organic materials like animal and plant matter are broken down in an oxygen-free environment known as anaerobic digestion. The process of anaerobic digestion uses bacteria to break down the organic material, releasing methane and carbon dioxide. This biogas is then collected and processed for use in a variety of ways.

Biogas production starts with the digestion tank where organic material is placed and bacteria begin breaking it down. As the bacteria break down the material, they produce biogas which is composed of methane, carbon dioxide, and other trace elements. This biogas is then collected and sent to a gas holder where it is stored. From there, the biogas is sent to a processing unit, where it is cleaned, filtered, and further purified to remove any unwanted components.

Once processed, biogas can be used to generate energy through the use of a generator. This energy can then be used for heating, cooking, and other applications. Additionally, some biogas can also be used in vehicles as a renewable fuel source.

Overall, the production of biogas is a complex process, but one that offers great benefits for our environment. It is an environmentally friendly source of energy that helps reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, while providing us with a sustainable alternative for generating energy.

Resources:

Landfill Gas - Hamburg University of Technology

Methane Gas - Collected Notes

Biogas Can Be Stored - Notion

Personalised touches increase customer loyalty, as the customer will likely feel connected with your business. All businesses make mistakes now and then, but those that are most loyal to the brand are less likely to dwell on these mistakes. Instead, they will overlook them and continue purchasing from your business. In addition, there are ways that adding personalisation to your products can open up new lucrative opportunities and markets for your business. In this article, we take a look at how adding personalised touches can increase customer demand.

Gifting market

Products such as coke have huge amounts of demand. However, they’re not seen as an item that you would give to a friend at Christmas or a birthday. Through personalisation, Coca-Cola changed this and opened up new gifting markets. They created a series of cans and bottles with people’s names on them and allowed people to create their own personalised cans or bottles online. People chose to do this as a Christmas present for their friends and family that loved to drink coke. The personalisation of coke cans and bottles was a huge success for Coca-Cola; they managed to increase sales by around 3%. This shows that personalisation can increase consumer demand by opening up new gifting opportunities.

PR stories

Unique personalisation can lead to additional PR opportunities, which can help to boost brand visibility and increase customer demand. In addition to the increase in demand from the gifting market, Coca-Cola was able to create stories surrounding its personalised Coke campaigns. This personalisation had never been done before; it was, in effect, unique in the drinks market. Publications picked up on this and wrote stories about the campaign. This PR helped Coca-Cola even further as it increased its marketing visibility and put its brand front of mind.

Shareability

People spend a vast amount of time on social media; they’re always looking for new things to share with their friends to gain popularity on the channel. Brands that can tap into this have the opportunity to increase demand and gain free marketing. Personalisation is a great way to do this. Going back to the example of personalised Coca-Cola bottles and cans, people were delighted when they found their name in the shops, especially if they had a particularly unusual or long name that was challenging to find. Once they found their personalised coke can or bottle, they shared it with their friends and followers on social media. These shares encouraged others to find their name and increased demand for personalised bottles of Coke. This can also work for personalised gift boxes; customers are more likely to share gift boxes with their name on them with their friends and followers on social media, providing free marketing for the business. This can help businesses to gain more customers and a better online following.

Attracts attention

Personalised items can attract other people's attention; customers may find that friends and family ask them where they got the item and how it was personalised. Clothing items often draw attention from others when they’re being worn. Items in the home that draw attention include personalised pictures or personalised artwork, such as a neon sign with the family name. People will be more likely to notice your personalised items, which will result in you gaining more customers through word-of-mouth marketing. This is only really applicable when the product itself has been personalised.

Additional functionality

Being able to personalise items can help to improve their functionality in some cases. For example, personalised towels may help to stop arguments in the home between siblings. Personalised mugs can give everyone a sense of ownership over their item and make them feel special.

Winter driving can be challenging. Whether driving on icy terrain or on streets covered in snow, tyres can make a massive difference. But choosing the right tyre for winter driving can be challenging given the wide range of options available. Finding the ideal winter tyre doesn't have to be difficult. But thanks to a few pointers we'll explore which tyre is the best choice for winter driving.

The three main types

All-season tyres – These are the most common type of tyres, and they are designed to offer year-round performance in both wet and dry conditions. They are typically made with a harder rubber compound that helps to improve traction in all temperatures.

Winter tyres – These tyres are specifically designed for use in cold weather. They feature an extra-soft rubber compound that stays flexible even in freezing temperatures, providing increased grip on icy and snowy roads. Winter tyres also have deeper treads than all-season tyres to help improve traction in wet and slushy conditions.

Summer tyres – These tyres are designed specifically for hot weather and high speeds. The rubber compound is usually softer than all-season tyres, allowing for better grip on dry roads, as well as improved braking performance. Summer tyres also tend to be more lightweight than their all-season counterparts, allowing for better fuel efficiency. It's important to remember that while summer tyres can provide great handling capabilities in the heat, they are not suitable for colder climates. As such, it's important to choose the right tyres based on your climate and driving style. If you live in a colder area or drive through snow frequently, then it's best to opt for a set of winter tyres. On the other hand, if you don't experience much snow but want improved handling at higher speeds, then summer tyres could be your best option. Whichever tyres you choose, make sure to check the tread depth regularly and replace them when necessary. This will ensure maximum safety and performance during the winter months.

Which type is better during the winter months

Winter tyres are the ideal tyres to use for driving in the cold. They're made with tread patterns that are especially suited to harsher climates and slick terrain. In addition to this, they offer softer rubber that enhances traction and grip in icy weather.

Winter tyres are best suited to temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius and when driving on snow or ice-covered roads. Some winter tyres are designed to provide superior grip in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius.

The use of winter tyres can significantly reduce stopping distances and increase cornering stability. They can also be beneficial in areas that experience a lot of snowfall, as they will perform better on deep snow and on packed snow than all-season or summer tyres.

However, bear in mind that winter tyres are not suitable for warmer weather, and should be changed back to summer or all-season tyres once the temperature rises above 7 degrees Celsius. This is because the softer rubber compound used in winter tyres doesn’t provide enough grip in higher temperatures.

Overall, winter tyres provide superior performance in cold weather and on icy or snowy roads. They may cost more than all-season or summer tyres, but the improved safety and performance they offer make them well worth the investment.

Save money

Why not save money by getting a fuel card for small businesses? Most cars come with all-season tyres, which are a great choice as they can be used all year round. However, if you want to save some money and get the best performance out of your car, investing in a set of winter tyres could be a good option. Winter tyres are specifically designed to provide improved traction and grip in cold temperatures, which can help make driving safer in snowy or icy conditions. Winter tyres have a deeper tread pattern than regular tyres, which helps to displace slush and water from the contact patch with the road surface, ensuring your car has maximum traction.

Resources:

Fuel Card - Hamburg University of Technology

Fuel Card - Collected Notes

Fuel Cards for Small Businesses - Notion

If you’re considering buying a second monitor for your PC setup, this article can help you make the best decision. We take a look at the pros and cons of multiple monitors.

Multiple programs or tabs

The major benefit of having two monitors is the ability to see and use several programs or tabs at the same time. This can speed things up significantly and make you more efficient when using your PC. For example, suppose you’re creating a presentation for a work meeting but also using Google to find information and fact-check your knowledge. In that case, you can have both things open at the same time without having to switch between them whilst working. Another great way to use multiple monitors is when you need to watch your emails and reply promptly and continuously. You don’t need to keep switching back and forth to your email application; you can simply keep it open on one of your screens.

Flexibility

A monitor, when used with a laptop, offers the flexibility and portability of the laptop and the ability to use two screens when you’re in a single location. This is a great solution for employees that work remotely and have to travel frequently. They can set up a monitor at home and use their laptop as a second screen. When they need to take their work with them, they can simply disconnect the monitor, and the laptop can be placed in a bag or carried.

Distractions

Having several applications open at once can be useful for some people. However, others might find it stops them from focusing on their current tasks, and they keep getting distracted. This could be the case if you keep emails open on one screen and constantly reply to each one. If you’re the kind of person that gets distracted easily, you might want to hide distracting applications and give yourself specific time slots to answer emails during the day.

Cost

Multiple monitors are more expensive than a single monitor; you’ll need to pay for the monitor itself and the cables to connect them to your computer. However, despite this cost, there are deals out there that can make things cheaper. A PC bundle with a monitor can help you save money on both items leaving enough money in your budget for an additional monitor. Shop around and look for the best possible deals before committing to a PC or a new monitor.

Ultra-widescreen monitor

An ultra-widescreen monitor can be as useful as two monitors. You can have two applications open at the same time side by side. This could be a great option for your PC setup if you prefer your applications to be directly next to each other without a gap between where one monitor ends and the other monitor starts. It can also save you some money compared to buying two monitors separately. Make sure you consider an ultra-wide monitor as an option, as well as a dual monitor setup.

Desk space

For some PC users, a dual monitor is not possible with their current desk arrangement. You’ll need enough space to fit both monitors and a deep enough desk to avoid causing yourself eye strain. Make sure you measure the space you have before buying a second monitor for your desk. If your space is limited, you could choose an ultra-wide monitor so you can have two applications open at the same time. The base of the monitor isn’t going to be much larger than a single monitor. However, you need to be careful if you intend for the monitor to be hanging off the edge of the desk. You’ll also need to be a good distance away from the screen to prevent eye strain.

Adding a second monitor to your PC setup can greatly increase your productivity and help you multitask. However, some people might find that it has a negative effect on their ability to concentrate. To get a consistent picture when using your PC, choose two monitors that are the same brand. Always make sure you measure the space on your desk before buying a second monitor. It will be really frustrating if your second monitor arrives and you can’t use it because you don’t have enough space.

Resources:

Graphics Card for PC - Homify

Gaming Monitor - Hamburg University of Technology

Best Gaming Monitors - Collected Notes

Gaming PC and Monitor - Notion

Spending time at home with family in winter is something many people enjoy. There’s nothing better than getting home from a long day's work and putting on some comfy winter loungewear, and relaxing for the evening. We take a look at some of the best cosy winter loungewear you can purchase.

Hoodie blanket

Hoodie blankets are very comfortable and popular. If you haven’t heard of hoodie blankets, they’re essentially oversized hoodies that also act as a blanket, perfect for keeping cosy and comfortable in your home. When shopping for a hoodie blanket, go for one that’s big, so it covers most of your body and keeps you as warm as possible. You can buy many different styles of hoodie blankets, some with bright, colourful patterns and others that are more neutral in colour. Many hooded blankets are one-size-fits-all, so they make great Christmas or winter birthday gifts.

Jogging bottoms

If you want to be cosy at home, you need to ditch the jeans and change into a comfortable pair of jogging bottoms. Jogging bottoms can be stylish if you choose the right pair, and you might find you end up wearing them outside and inside your home. Choose jogging bottoms with a cuffed ankle and a slim fit if being stylish is important when you’re relaxing at home. Pair your jogging bottoms with a cropped top, a jacket and trainers if you want to look great but don’t want to get changed when people come around or if you need to pop to the shops. A pair of joggers can completely change how comfortable you are when relaxing at home in the evening.

Dressing gowns

Dressing gowns are great for putting on over your pyjamas when you head downstairs to make a cup of tea and breakfast. They’re also ideal for keeping you warm in your home when things get a little chilly. For the ultimate luxurious dressing gown, choose cashmere. This luxurious material is one of the softest options you can choose for a dressing gown. Cashmere dressing gowns will cost you a bit more money, but they’re worth the investment. A quality cashmere dressing gown will last many years if you look after it properly, keeping you warm, cosy and comfortable during the winter. You can also wear cashmere dressing gowns in the summer, as cashmere is breathable and can be worn throughout the year.

Slippers

You can’t neglect your feet when you’re relaxing at home. A comfortable and warm pair of slippers is a must during the winter. Make sure you choose something with support for your feet if you suffer from any feet problems or have flat feet. Hard-bottom slippers are also a good choice if you want to go outside when wearing your slippers. If you have wide feet, make sure you choose a pair of wide-fit slippers that are suitable for your feet. Aesthetics are also important when choosing slippers; when your slippers look great and feel comfortable, you won't want to be without them in your home.

Loungewear sets

Loungewear sets look great on all women; matching tops and bottoms come in a huge range of different materials and styles. Some are fluffy and lined for ultimate comfort and warmth, and others are thinner and similar to pyjamas. You can also buy loungewear sets that you can wear in and outside of your home. Look for loungewear sets that look more like activewear rather than thinner, pyjama-style loungewear if you want to wear them outside the house.

Blankets

Although blankets aren’t technically loungewear, they are a great accessory that can help you relax and stay warm at home. Cosying up under a blanket with your family to watch a Christmas movie over the holidays is a great way to make a memory. Choose a blanket that’s warm and fluffy but also goes with your home decoration. When your blankets aren’t in use, you can place them on the back or arms of your sofa as additional decoration for your home.

Cosy loungewear is something that everyone can enjoy, from young children to elderly adults. It also makes a great Christmas gift for any family member. Matching Christmas loungewear is also a fun way to celebrate with your loved ones.

Resources:

Cashmere Gloves - Hamburg University of Technology

Cashmere Hat - Collected Notes

Womens Cashmere Beanie - Notion
